Don't underestimate people power
BARRY Prismall's interesting and thoughtful opinion piece (The Examiner, May 31) is both encouraging and worrying.

We have always known this to be a true David and Goliath battle. David won last time with his little slingshot.
Our only weapons are our voices, and our fierce determination to protect our village, its future and the wonderful committed community we live in. We are aware of the huge responsibility we face.
There will be no other time and no other people who can protect historic Westbury. It's up to us.
Thanks for caring Barry Prismall, but it isn't a "lost cause". Never underestimate the power of people with passion and purpose.
E Wood, Westbury.
Highway road safety
I READ the story in (The Examiner, May 30) about the hit and run on the West Tamar Highway with a feeling of trepidation, as each time I enter or exit Deans Lane, it seems I take my life in my hands.
The access and egress is difficult at the best of times, but particularly so when cars travelling North hug the stopping lane and even more so when cars are parked around the entrance. This forces exit and entry from and into the main flow of traffic, rather than being able to use the stopping lane to merge.
Some years ago, I made enquiries at the West Tamar Council about the safety and they confirmed that it was unsafe due to limited visibility (less than 50 metres). Yet at least 10 years have passed and nothing has been done despite there being space to add a merging lane.

A four-Day work week
I NOTE Helen Polley's thought bubble suggesting that employers move to introducing a four-day work week for employees (The Examiner, June 1).
As always with politicians trying desperately to get publicity, her idea is completely lacking in any detail on how it would work. Will it mean that workers lose a day's pay or is she expecting employers to pay their employees the same wage for working less?
Perhaps she is proposing that workers just work longer hours on the four work days to make up the difference (ditching the Labor party's hard fought battle for a eight-hour work day and possibly overtime penalty rates)?
No wonder she was at pains to distance her proposal from being Labor party policy. Come on Helen, please put some detail behind your proposal, or was your aim simply to get your name in the paper?

No weight in final decision
LAUNCESTON Heritage tries to interfere with Launceston Hotel Decision (The Examiner, May 30).
It is a shame that our democratic society allows non elected members to try and influence the well vetted decisions of our leaders.
This Launceston Heritage Not High-rise member Jim Collier complaining on the height of a much beneficial hotel in Launceston is nonsense.
Mr Collier should always be allowed his opinion, but never should it hold weight in the final decision.
Our democratic society relies on majority rules instigated by elected members.
If Mr Collier wants to be heard then stand for office as an elected member. Raising $15,000 for an expert witness is a joke.
We already have had qualified people to strictly access all aspects and allowed it to proceed. A great design, fitting in with the surrounding environment and providing over 400 jobs.
The Launceston heritage does not and should never speak for the ratepayers. Well done City of Launceston Council.
Brian Wightman was right, some people have too much idle time on their hands.

Watch this space during election
PREVIOUS inquiries into the application for a VC to Teddy Sheean have based their recommendations on the rule of law/injustice and possible repercussions into the loss of HMAS Armidale in the first place.
The 2019 tribunal has conducted a merit review against the eligibility criteria based on natural justice. The families of approximately six other wartime naval officers/sailors will be noting the federal government's actions.
Watch this space if Teddy is awarded a VC. It's time to quote the election campaign of a previous PM.

Jobs and Self Sufficiency
WE have plenty of resources Australia and Tasmania coal iron ore gold gas.
We are selling it overseas where we could be using it here making cars and steel for unlimited things like machinery, houses, and factories.
This would be great for giving people jobs, but it's disappearing overseas where they make it cheaper.

Time to get serious on hoons
WE are sick and tired of the constant all night drag racing around Invermay Road, Mowbray.
Right up to 5.30am on a Saturday morning after keeping us awake all night.
The police are not serious enough about catching these deviants of society or lack the will or resources.
Why can't permanent speed cameras or just any rolling camera in HD be set up in people's front gardens or nature strips to catch these dangerous activities?
Nearly most nights after dark a particular motorcycle in the Invermay and Mowbray areas goes hooning around for hours creating a nuisance.
Please get serious about these dregs of society.
It angers me and bemuses me that more people turn a blind ear/eye to these cowards of the day.
