Arriving at North Launceston as a premiership player with Ulverstone, the physical education student impressed enough during pre-season to be picked for round one and never looked back.

The 23-year-old played every game of a premiership year and, according to coach Taylor Whitford, was in as good a shape as any when coronavirus hit three weeks out from the new season.

"I was feeling really good," Davies said.

"I know for a fact I was the fittest I've been in years - a lot fitter than I was at the start of the year last year.

"The few years before that I always got injured playing touch footy or something and I wasn't able to complete a full pre-season so this year was probably the closest one I've had to a full pre-season."

Football leagues statewide were initially postponed until May 31 with no guarantee of a season in 2020.

Players were permitted to train in pairs only until restrictions were eased earlier this week to allow groups of 10.

Davies conceded it had been difficult to dig deep in training knowing the season might not go ahead.

"I know myself it's been a real struggle to motivate yourself to train - especially being individual - and now building back into group training it's definitely been a struggle," he said.

"I think the thing that makes training enjoyable to start off with is the camaraderie you have with your teammates - getting to chat about what you did through the week, enjoying training because you're there with other people.

"When you're training by yourself it's just not as enjoyable.

"You don't have someone there to go 'come on, you need to work harder, you need to do a bit more' ... you're not putting in the effort like you would in pre-season."

A TSL season looks more likely than at any other time since the pandemic first broke out, but it was never a certainty to go ahead.

Even with matches being permitted by Public Health, the financial challenges of crowd restrictions present a significant hurdle to a competition taking place.

A shorter season and reduced payments appear certainties should a season be confirmed, but Davies insists the year that has been will make players more hungry, not less, to compete.

"Everyone will say the same thing as I would - everyone's hanging out for it.

"Football is something we look forward to in winter and it's something everyone looks forward to after the working week or school week.

"It's a chance to get to spend time with your mates and work together to achieve something.

"Even just in local league they love it, so I definitely want to play some games whether it be five, 10 or whatever, however many there are."

Davies said the benefits of top-level footy go far beyond two hours of enjoyment on a Saturday afternoon.

"It's like a coping mechanism for some people - when it first went to no training and no games it sort of dropped my mental state a bit.

"Not being able to see your mates ... especially like that it really affected your mental health moreso than your physical health."

Davies has had eight months to reflect on achieving the TSL's ultimate goal.

The youngest of three footballing brothers attributes the Bombers' success to their ability to grow as a playing group and as friends over the season.

"To win a premiership is something not many people can say they've done so obviously it's massive - for the club to win five of the last six is huge," Davies said.

"From what Taylor said it was a relatively new bunch last year - it's a forever-changing list.

"I think the way that we grew over the season as a team and group of mates really showed as we started to play for each other and string together some consistency."

The 'North Launceston culture' so many speak about enraptured Davies from day one.

Not only did the outside runner look at home among North's best 22, but he also felt it, and has since begun extending the same help and support towards new teammates.

"Knowing and learning my role in the team has helped me become a better player for the younger guys coming through - I can explain my role to them," he said.

"When we played practice matches earlier in the year I was able to teach what I'd been taught to the younger guys that were playing on me, so that was pretty cool and that's the way the club runs.

"Everybody's responsible - even though we have leaders, everyone's a leader in their own right.

"I haven't played in a team where they make you feel so welcome in it and being a new guy last year they did that from the get-go.

"Going into this this season I felt like I was a massive part of this team, so that was a really exciting part for me ... I've never felt more part of a team."
