Figures released by the Education Department on Monday showed there was a 24.1 per cent attendance rate statewide on Monday, 25.3 per cent on Tuesday, 26.5 per cent on Wednesday, 25.6 per cent on Thursday, and 24.2 per cent on Friday.

School attendance rates plummeted over March due to fears over the spread of coronavirus which led to calls for the government to close schools early.

The attendance rate before the start of the Easter holidays sank as low as 12 per cent.

From next Monday, primary school students and year 11 and 12 students will be expected to return to the classroom.

Parents who choose to keep their children at home for the rest of term two will not be penalised if they do so.

Tasmanian Association of State School Organisations president Nigel Jones said it was important parents followed advice offered by the Education Department.

He said the rise of students returning to the classroom early could be attributed to an inceease in parents having to go back to work.

Mr Jones said if attendance figures reached 30 per cent this week, there would be additional pressure placed on teacher to deliver both in-person and online learning.

"I would presume going on all the messages from the minister, students should stay at home until May 25 unless they absolutely cannot," he said.

Students in years 7 to 10 will have to return to school on June 9.

Students with a disability or with a condition that makes them vulnerable to coronavirus have been advised to stay at home until term three starts.
