There are now 44 Tasmanian suburbs that are more than half covered by the 5G mobile network.
5G is a higher-frequency wireless network that enables much quicker internet than the existing 4G. It uses "millimeter waves", which move faster and carry more data than the lower frequency waves used by 4G networks.

Telstra regional general manager Michael Patterson said 2020 would be "the year of 5G."

"It's not just 5G users experiencing the benefits of this roll out - by upgrading our sites to 5G we're also bringing network benefits to other users including greater capacity for 4G customers," he said.
The Nothern Tasmanian suburbs are: Dilston, Invermay, Launceston CBD, Newstead, Punchbowl, South Launceston, Summerhill, and West Launceston, with the rest being in the Greater Hobart area.
