On Friday, Premier Peter Gutwein released the government's plan to rebuild the state in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. He acted swiftly off the back of the national cabinet earlier in the day, which put in place more broadly agreed milestones for recovery across Australia.

For many it will give them some key dates to look forward to.

Many parents will be eager to give their children some certainty about their return to school - for many that will be a big part in getting back to something close to normality. And it will also be a chance to reunite with friends who many may have not seen for many weeks.

It has also provided some clarity for many businesses, sporting and community organisations.

While they may not be able to throw off the covers, unlock the doors and get back to normal operations next week, they can start to formulate a plan. The staged nature of the plan makes good sense.

As Mr Gutwein says, it will give the government and, more importantly, the public health experts, a chance to assess how things are progressing and keep us heading in the right direction.

Some people will be a little unhappy their sector or priority isn't being opened up as soon as others. But a mass return to normal social interaction was never going to happen. It charts a course for all of us. It's not a race to get back to normality and we shouldn't be comparing ourselves to other states/territories.

While some of the key dates are a fair way off, they are some of the more significant areas which will mean greater movement around the community - and therefore pose the greatest level of risk.

The government doesn't seem to be denying there won't be more cases of coronavirus in the community.

We must all listen to Tasmanian advice and hope they are prepared for a rapid response and containment so we don't end up with a second wave of broad-ranging restrictions. That would be hard to take for all and likely last much longer.
