In reality, most should have been undertaking their first day back at school - if even from a distance - and probably weren't listening in.
But he gave a signal to many who may have been planning for some time for an end of year celebration, that it may not happen this year.
He also forecast that it man mean the end for school camps for some time.
It's a fairly pessimistic outlook, to think that by November or December this year we could still be under some sort of social isolation restricting movement at this level.
However, it is another signal from the government that they are prepared to stay the course to control coronavirus in this state.
"I think what students should expect is we're going to do our very best to keep them safe," Mr Gutwein said.
"And if that means end of year graduation dinners can't be conducted as they would of in the past then I'm sorry, that's the case."
Mr Gutwein said limiting travel around the state, such as to school camps,
He said it would be a matter of working with the education department and public health officials on managing the risk.
And the thought of a bunch of students at close quarters in a cabin or tent may not be that appealing, no matter how often we hear that our young people appear to be less susceptible to coronavirus.
Nobody wants to be the place that rolled the dice and ended up with a major infection within a school community.
If the containment measures continue for that long, then it's a fair chance that many of us will have to be giving up other activities and events we would have been expecting at that time of year.
Should social distancing still be needed in the last couple of months of the year it will be putting a fair dampener on traditional end of year celebrations across the board, not just those coming to the end of the school year.
For now we just need to stay home and hope it stems the spread.
