Along with the severe wind warning a gale wind warning is in place for coastal areas from Tasman Island to St Helens Point.
Mr Johnston said we can expect better conditions next week.
"During Saturday evening winds will decrease significantly and then from Sunday well through next week we will be under the influence of a high pressure system to the west so the weather is just becoming more and more settled into next week," he said.
