In the fourth of a series of previews on the NTFA's women's competition,The Examiner looks at Meander Valley, who after narrowly missing finals, have added a new coach.
Coach: Beau Polley
Captain: Charlotte How - last year's best and fairest for the Suns will lead the side once again.
2019 finish: Fifth - four wins and six losses.
Three wins over George Town and a victory against fourth-placed Bridgenorth were almost enough to see the Suns knock the Parrots out of finals and join Evandale, Scottsdale and South Launceston in the top four.
It wasn't to be though as losses against Old Scotch and Old Launcestonians added up.
Ins: Kate Bowland (Evandale), Jacqui Hodgkinson (Evandale), Jocelyn Gee (Evandale), Lily James, Emma Lawrence, Ursula Kate, Gracienne Linsday.
Outs: Caitlyn Webster (Old Launcestonians) - last year's club leading goalkicker with 18 majors.
Who's impressed: "Captain Charlotte How [really impressed]. Obviously she is the captain, but she was there most nights as well as Danielle Saltmarsh, India Graham, Jacqui Hodgkinson as well - she was there almost every session we had - and Montanna Eastley," Polley said.
Coach says: "Kate and Jacqui won a flag at Evandale not last year but the year before so they are pretty handy to have in the side. They bring a fair bit of leadership and game style with them which is really good.
"As a club, they brought me in with the intention that they want to make finals and that's what we are trying to do. Given that we aren't too sure what's going on with the season, if we do get some sort of season underway, that will certainly be our goal, to make finals - absolutely no doubt.
"The club have been really welcoming and really positive. Any questions I've had they've always been there to help me out and any questions that I've had Damien Rhind, who is the seniors coach out there, and Lyndon Hampton, who is the assistant, they've been really helpful to deal with.
OTHER PREVIEWS
"What we are doing is on our team page on Facebook, every time someone goes for a run or whatever it might be, we just get them to post what they've done.
"Obviously it's hard for motivation right now and seeing people do stuff makes you want to get out and do more, especially with no training at the moment, it makes it hard and people have to steer clear of each other but that's what we are doing and it seems to be working really well.
"We are still waiting on answers from AFL Tasmania about what the season - if there is going to be one - is going to look like and we are just hoping we can get something out of it so we can put all of our hard work from the pre-season into a game."
