In the fifth of a series of previews on the NTFA's premier division, The Examiner looks at the in-form team of last season's back half, Rocherlea, who have added some big names.
Coach: Andrew Cox-Goodyer
Captain: Luke Richards
2019 finish: Fourth - eight wins and eight losses. Defeated by Hillwood in semi-final.
Ins: Josh Ponting (North Launceston, returning), Zane Brown (Perth, returning), Josh Holton (Perth, returning), Ben Elmer (North Launceston, returning), Cooper Praciak (North Launceston), Michael Murfett (East Coast).
Outs: "I don't think we have too many that are going to impact us as far as seniors go," Cox-Goodyer said.
Who's impressed: "I think everyone stepped up. Obviously having a player of Josh's calibre coming back to the club in a mentoring role sort of pushed everyone to be better and better themselves.
"The standard that he brought from North obviously started to filter through the group and they started to see that it's going to take a bit more to be in the senior team this year so I couldn't put my finger on an individual. It's been a team improvement during this pre-season from my perspective."
Coach says: "Obviously we want to win finals - that's our aim.
"Last year, my first year coaching, we just wanted to make finals which was looking pretty bleak at the start of the year but the boys kicked into gear in the second half and we even managed to win a final.
OTHER PREVIEWS
"That exceeded my expectations and this year, we've got the players to go all the way I believe. The intensity on the training track has certainly gone up this year as well.
"We had a week or so there where we were allowed to have groups of 10 or under so we were just doing running blocks in groups of five just to keep the fitness in the legs and that lasted about a week.
"I've just put it on the boys to take care of themselves in the downtime. We drew up a bit of a running program for them to complete by themselves at their own leisure.
"I know it was tough doing a full pre-season and then getting told a week before that we weren't playing so that sort of put a downer on things but with the group we've got, we've got a lot of leaders in there.
"Jordan Cousens played two finals games in the seniors last year so you can nearly count him as a seniors recruit - he's been firing.
"Then you've got Jacob Hawkins who has done a ton of work to get his body right and will be firing this year and the likes of Sammy Maddern and those blokes around the midfield - it's enormous.
"We are just looking forward to getting back into it. Hopefully we will know more come May 11.
