Kristie Lee Miller, 32, pleaded guilty in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Monday to possessing a controlled plant of greater than one kilogram, and an associated use charge.
Police searched her premises on December 3 where they found a large cardboard box in her lounge room with 1029.2 grams of cannabis inside. The amount was confirmed in court records.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Miller admitted the cannabis was hers and told police it was for her personal use.
She also told police the cannabis was the product of two plants she grew four years earlier and that she does not supply to anybody else.
The court heard that Miller claimed the cannabis was "on display" in the lounge room because she was in the process of disposing of it.
When Magistrate Ken Stanton asked the prosecutor and defence counsel how many ounces of cannabis were in a kilogram, he was told two ounces.
The court then estimated the value of a kilogram of cannabis to be $500, based on the assumption that one ounce was $250.
There are 35 ounces in a kilogram, meaning a kilogram of cannabis could be worth about $8750, based on the court's valuation.
However, Miller was sentenced on the assumption that the cannabis was worth $500.
Mr Stanton said it was "a substantial amount of cannabis" and he mused over whether to record a conviction.
"I need to deter you and others from participating in the use and possession of that drug which some see as benign, but the law does not," he said.
"Given the amount involved I think it is appropriate to record a conviction and a modest fine."
Miller was convicted and fined $300.
