A member of Australia's under-15 Oceania championships gold medal side, Deans had been preparing to represent his country at the under-16 Asian championships in April before it was called off due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Australia qualified for the under-17 worlds in Bulgaria via junior ranking and will meet Canada, Italy and Egypt in Group A should the tournament take place as expected from July 4-12.

"Hopefully I'll be able to make that team," Deans said, "I've been selected for the camp."

The 17-year-old would be unlucky to miss out after an impressive start to 2020.

After attending an Australian development camp at the start of the year, Deans was selected for an NBA global academy outfit that played in February's under-20 nationals in Canberra.

The former Riverside High student hit the scoreboard in each of the academy's four wins, including one against his home state.

"We had a solid team and didn't lose any games, but we pulled out of the tournament because we weren't an Australian team, we had international players as well," Deans said.

"It was really good just to be able to play against high level athletes and really long athletes who I don't get to play against very often.

"And just to be one of only two guys to get asked to play for the team - everybody else up there was on a scholarship, so it was nice to be able to live with them for a week, do everything they do and train with them at such a high level."
