Pregnant women have been disappointed with changes to birthing arrangements made as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, but they have accepted the status quo could not remain.

That's the feedback Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation Tasmanian secretary Emily Shepherd said she has received from her members on the frontline in Launceston.

"There are some service changes in terms of visitors accessing the [maternity] unit and that is predominately there would be one visitor who would be allocated to the pregnant women during labor and postnatally as well," she said.
"And that one support person or relative would be that consistent person throughout their stay, as opposed to having limited short visits from numerous people."
Ms Shepherd said the changes "potentially caused a bit of anxiety among women" but most were disappointed.
"Generally speaking from our reps, most women have been accepting of the changes and they clearly understand the reasons why and the need for those changes to be put in place," she said.

Pregnant women could be assured, all steps were being taken to protect their health and that of their baby," Ms Shepherd said.
"We understand that from the heath service, all necessary steps in terms of protective precautions for women, pregnant women, labouring women, babies and staff are being implemented.
"There are plans in place in terms of how to manage any COVID-19 positive patients who may present for maternity services."
Ms Shepherd said women had not been encouraged to give birth at home because of COVID-19.
"There's certainly no indication home births are being encouraged," she said.
