Captain of the association's representative team last season, Launceston-based Johnston was debating taking a step up to state league competition before joining the Parrots as travelling to Scottsdale became tedious.
"I was just at work and was talking to a few of the guys who come into work and they were affiliated with Bridgenorth and in the end just said, 'how about it?'" Johnston said.
"They're a really good bunch of girls. They are quite young to what I was used to at Scottsdale, they were a bit older but it's been good and I'm excited to get going this year."
MORE FOOTBALL:
Growing up in the North-East, the 34-year-old had played for the Magpies for the past three seasons, steering them to a premiership in 2017 as well as grand finals in 2018 and 2019, so telling her teammates of the move was tough.
"It wasn't an easy decision to say that I wouldn't play there but I guess you've just got to go with what feels right or what's best for you in the end."
Reaching the finals in their inaugural year in the NTFAW competition, Bridgenorth finished last season with four wins to their name, with coach Bobby Beams ecstatic to bring a player of Johnston's calibre into his side.
"She's one of the state's most experienced female players," he said.
"She sets high standards, brings great leadership and energy to our young group so it's awesome to have her at the club."
The Parrots were originally set to start their campaign with a clash against Old Scotch in the league's super round this weekend until the coronavirus pandemic put a hold on all forms of football until at least May 31.
