Any non-essential travellers arriving in Tasmania after midnight on Sunday March 29 are required to isolate for 14 days in a hotel operated by the government.

Essential travellers include active military personnel, members of Parliament, health, transport and freight specialists, flight and ship crews, paramedics and ambulance officers.

A government spokesperson confirmed on Monday unless a FIFO worker was captured under the essential traveller classification they would need to be quarantined in a government-run facility.

"For people who travel interstate for work, but who ordinarily reside in Tasmania, they can apply for an exemption if they can provide evidence that the requirement to enter 14 days of self-isolation in a government-provided accommodation upon entry to Tasmania would lead to unusual, undeserved or disproportionate hardship," the spokesperson said.

"Ultimately, the government's first priority is to keep Tasmanians safe and secure and prevent the spread of coronavirus in the community."

When Tasmania first introduced a mandatory 14 day self-isolation period for all interstate arrivals earlier this month, FIFO workers were not considered essential travellers who were exempt from quarantining.

They had to self-isolate but only for the period of time they were in the state before flying out to return to work.
