In the first instalment of a two-part series, some of Launceston's most prominent sporting names have shed light on why they're called what they're called.
NAME: Jarrod Freeman
KNOWN FOR: Bowling right-arm offies for Mowbray, Lindisfarne and Tasmania
NICKNAME: Froggy
EXPLANATION: "My Dad was nicknamed Froggy and a few boys found out and that was it."
NAME: Leigh Harding
KNOWN FOR: Winning NTFA flags for fun with South Launceston
NICKNAME: Spreader
EXPLANATION: "The truth isn't a very good story - one of my best mates growing up, Nathan Grima, he's a bit of a football icon on the mainland.
"For whatever reason when I was growing up as a kid my father used to call me Lebanon and that got shortened down to Lebs and don't ask me why, I don't know the story behind that.
"So being my greatest mate he grew up with me and heard Dad calling me Lebs or Lebanon and somehow out of that - I can't fathom how - but [it turned into] 'spread the bread you dirty Leb' and then it was just Spread.
"It's not as interesting a story as what you might think hearing it."
ELSEWHERE IN SPORT: Mowbray golfer Michael Leedham ripping up course at 70
NAME: Chris Walker
KNOWN FOR: Dominating for more than two decades in the NTFA
NICKNAME: Silly
EXPLANATION: "Second year of football, I was 18, just a basic keepings-off drill.
"The coach at the time, Stuart Prewer, said 'we'll find out who the smart people are' and of course I stuffed it up several times over and he just ran out and said 'Stupid Walker'.
"It stuck with that and eventually evolved to Silly."
MORE FOOTBALL:
NAME: Matthew Battle
KNOWN FOR: Coaching Westbury to multiple Cricket North flags
NICKNAME: Beege
EXPLANATION: "I've got no idea - honestly, I've got no explanation.
"One coach Luke McCormack just started calling me B and all of a sudden it just lengthened to Beege - that was 2004 at St Pats. There's not much to that at all I'm sorry."
NAME: Colin Lockhart
KNOWN FOR: Winning Tasmania's senior coach of the year and diligently mowing Lilydale Oval
NICKNAME: Nifty
EXPLANATION: "When I first started as an apprentice in 1984 there was another bloke by the name of the Colin, so they've gone 'well we can't call you that'.
"My middle name is Neville so they called me Nifty Nev, and it was more after the [TV show] Kingswood Country and basically I was Nifty Nev the concrete Aboriginal.
"For years and years, even through two premierships out at Lilydale when I first went out there in 92 and 94, everyone just thought my name was Nifty Nev.
"A lot of people only knew me as Nifty, not as Colin."
NAME: Andrew Nichols
KNOWN FOR: Taking poles for South Launceston and being a famously nice guy
NICKNAME: SOC
EXPLANATION: "It was my first season playing back in 2004-05, I was playing third-grade at South Launceston.
"One of the players in the team started calling me that and then everyone started calling me that and to start with I didn't know why.
"By the end of the season I'd talked to them and found out why, it was because my Dad, Colin Nichols, used to be in an umpire in the NTCA.
"So a bit like Steven Silvagni - Son of Serge - sort of thing, I'm Son Of Colin, SOC.
"I didn't know what they were going on about for the first few weeks and every season when new players come along they say 'why are you called SOC?' so I have to explain it every year."
