Leader of Government Business Michael Ferguson said the COVID-19 Emergency Provisions Bill set out a way for decisions to be made by government in the absence of Parliamentary decisions.

He said Parliament would be recalled should urgent legislation be required to be passed.

"We are not going to stop working even thought we are not physically in this chamber," Mr Ferguson said.

"If circumstances permit us to meet sooner, we will meet sooner."

Labor's David O'Byne said the party supported the government's move to shut down Parliament in the interests of workplace heath and safety for elected members and staff.

Greens leader Cassy O'Connor said it was regretful that there wasn't the technological capacity to allow for Parliament to sit remotely.

"I hope this awful period that we are in will lead to new thinking and creative and innovative ways of us to work together," she said.
