The state is set to have a team in the national competition again starting with the 2021-22 season, with McCoy on Monday saying the fact the sport had presently ground to a halt at grassroots level was unlikely to be detrimental to that goal.

Only a delay to the upgrading of the Derwent Entertainment Centre, a required part of the process for the state to hit the courts of the national competition, would see that date pushed back, although McCoy acknowledged the situation was one that was ever-changing.

"It possibly could impact it, however, hopefully not,'' McCoy admitted.

"We had a phone hook-up last week with the advisory group and it was discussed but it shouldn't impact at this stage, as there is still a bit of paperwork (to go) and then planning for the venue and then turning some soil there and getting renovations started before the end of the year.

"In regards to the planning of the team there is a lot of work behind the scenes of getting the interim CEO up and running and they will look to appoint coaching staff and further admin staff, so this hasn't impacted it right now, but the longer it goes on, it impacts everything.

"I think the main impact would be having the venue ready, as I think the run up for the team itself would be fine, as in regards to announcing a brand and a name and starting player signings, the 18 months should play out all right, so it is more about having that venue up and running.

"Of course if it was this year (the re-entry with the virus), it would be a lot more difficult."

While admitting coronavirus had been a "real setback", especially with the Tasmanian Junior Basketball League about to make its debut, Basketball Tasmania was looking to the future.

"As a sport we are using this as a time to spread a positive message to keep fit and those that can to keep a ball in their hands, especially our junior athletes, to have a mini-pre-season, a chance they never usually get,'' McCoy said.

"We're unsure when the games will be, whether it is July, October or next year, which is the hard part of all this, but as a sport we will try to remain positive."

But a silver lining could be a stronger than usual State League competition later on in the year, all things going to plan.

"We think teams will be really busting to play and if we can get started in August or September, I reckon it would be a really great competition,'' he said.

McCoy said Basketball Tasmania was trying to ensure "we keep our staff together and come through this (crisis) with all our staff intact".
