The rapidly snowballing saga has seen daily alterations to Australia's domestic and international fixtures with major implications for Tasmania.

On Friday, Cricket Australia announced that the remaining two men's One-Day Internationals against New Zealand, including one scheduled for Hobart on Friday, would be played behind closed doors.

The following day this was amended to the games being postponed.

And on Sunday the national body cancelled the final round of the domestic first-class competition in an effort to reduce travel.

This included this week's matches between South Australia and Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales and Victoria against Tasmania which was due to begin at Melbourne's Junction Oval on Thursday.

A decision as to whether the Shield final - due to begin on March 27 - will continue will be made in due course.

In a statement, Cricket Tasmania said that as the Tigers' are not in finals contention, the development "draws to a close our Shield campaign for the season".

Chief executive Dominic Baker said that the decision was an easy one for Australian cricket to make, although it was a disappointing way for the Tigers' season to end.

"All state CEOs were consulted before these decisions were made, and safe to say there were no objections," he said. "Cricket is part of the national fabric, but there is no question that we have a greater role to play in helping limit the spread of coronavirus in every way we can.

"We will continue to work closely with Cricket Australia and Tasmanian health agencies as the impacts in our state become more visible."

Cricket Australia has also cancelled its under-19 women's tour of South Africa having already postponed the women's tour of South Africa and the under-19 Indigenous team's T20 tour of New Zealand.

Other sports are making similar decisions with cycling and athletics both announcing on Saturday that upcoming junior championships would be cancelled and nationals postponed.

The International Hockey Federation has decided to put all Pro League matches scheduled until April 15 on hold while most major upcoming international cycling races have also been postponed.
