Director of Public Health Dr Mark Veitch said the woman, aged in her 40s, was in isolation in accommodation provided by the University of Tasmania in Launceston.
The advice from Public Health is that the student is in isolation and well supported, and there is no risk to others on campus.
"Normal campus operations can continue," he said.
"Public Health are managing this carefully to ensure public safety."
Dr Veitch said more information would be provided later today once Public Health officials had completed the necessary investigations.
University of Tasmania health and wellbeing director Chris Arnold in an email to staff and students said Public Health Services had advised there was no risk to others at the Launceston campus.
"Normal campus operations can continue," he said.
Mr Arnold said the fourth case was not a case of local transmission.
"The university has a clear plan that when there is local transmission in Tasmania, we will move to online delivery of teaching to the greatest extent possible," he said.
