Magistrate Sharon Cure handed Ricky Damien Brown a 10-month sentence as well as activating a five month suspended sentence from 2018.
Brown, 35, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, a total of four counts of stealing, three counts of burglary and one count of possession of stolen property. The court heard that Brown had been sentenced to jail 23 times since 2003 and was on bail at the time of the offence.
Ms Cure said a woman had walked into her bedroom about 5.20pm on December 27, 2019 to find Brown rifling through her drawers.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"Upon seeing her he jumped out the window. The woman's son pursued the complainant and the son and his father were able to capture a photo of him," she said.
"That is particularly serious to be found in a person's home taking jewellery items."
He was arrested at a nearby Coles car park.
In a crime spree after his release Brown also stole $4700 worth of tobacco products from a Woolworths supermarket in Hobart, stole a Guide Dog donation jar from the Norwood IGA, and $4000 worth of cigarettes from the Hill St Grocers at Longford.
Ms Cure said it was particularly concerning that Brown said in a pre-sentence report: "You lock me up like a dog ... and this is what happens when you let me out."
The court heard Brown got out of jail in early November.
About four hours later he broke into the Hill Street Grocer at Longford where he stole 150 packets of cigarettes, which were later found at a Ravenswood address.
Defence counsel Hannah Phillips submitted to Ms Cure that the prison was failing Brown because there were no support in there.
She said he was set to become a father for the first time in July and that he had an employment possibility as a shearer.
Brown's criminal career includes being shot in the leg by a police officer after being caught during a supermarket robbery in George Town.
A Magistrate activated a six-month suspended sentence.
