EcoPellets Tasmania started in 2019 in a bid to reduce heating and hot water costs for Tasmanians by producing cost-effective wood pellets. Operating from Bell Bay, the plant is the second-largest wood pellet plant in Australia.
CEO Shayne Murphy said the manufacturing of the wood pellets wasn't just about creating a useful product, but also about reducing waste and promoting a more efficient use of plantation timber resources.
"We saw an opportunity to turn a residue product into a renewable energy source," he said.
"All of our EcoPellets are created onsite using timber residue from sawmills and wood chip plants produced from plantation timber in Tasmania, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
"Previously these residues may have been sent to landfill, burned or just left in piles for years, but now we are using these resides and turning them into a useful product."
EcoPellets offer an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative for heating, but they can also be used as equine bedding and cat litter!

"One of the reasons we started the business was to get the price of pellets down, we just couldn't see why they should be so expensive," Mr Murphy said.
Passionate about renewable and low-cost energy alternatives, Mr Murphy said EcoPellets could be used to lower heating costs at nursing homes, hospitals and public housing.
"This is a renewable energy that can provide people with low-cost heating and hot water, I want to see that market grow and that's why we will be keeping costs low passing savings on to our customers," he said.
Mr Murphy said he would encourage all Tasmania's to look for alternatives to the heat pump when it comes to heating their homes.
"There are other options out there that are more effective and while outgoing costs may be more there will be savings in the long run." EcoPellets can be used as fuel for pellet heaters and Hydronic heating systems.
