About 30 headstones thought to be in breach of the Longford Cemetery's height rules will not be touched, mayor Mary Knowles says.

The height issue was discovered by the Northern Midlands Council during its day-early audit of the cemetery in February and caused angst and outrage in the community.
Councillor Knowles said the council would be staying away from the headstones in place that breached the 400mm maximum height rule.

"The council is not going to take any action on the existing headstones," she said.
"We will be meeting with the stone masons and making sure in future all the headstones abide to the guidelines."
The council's policy, which was last amended in July 2017 and is due for review in 2021, states:
The maximum allowable dimensions for a headstone in a limited monumental lawn cemetery are 900mm wide, 400mm high and 150mm deep - no structures are to encroach on to the area that is maintained by council.
