His debut collection of stories Born into this will be published early next year by the University of Queensland Press - who have acquired world rights to the work.

"It is exciting that my book will be published in Australia early next year," Mr Thompson said.

"Hopefully it can also find an overseas market.

"All the stories are fictional and based in Tasmania.

"My work covers a variety of themes including racism, identity and heritage destruction."

Mr Thompson said there would be 16 to 17 stories in the collection.

He has already started the editing process with the publisher.

"There is scope for the stories to be dramatised for TV and film and it would be great to see that happen," he said.

"The first step is to get it printed."

Mr Thompson, 42, who is a community worker with the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre said he only started writing seriously in 2016.

"I love books and have always been a reader," he said.

"I got serious about writing after I won a short story competition.

"Since then I've received a few grants from Arts Tasmania - which included a mentorship with (author) Kate Gordon.

"I started writing fiction quite late in life, but I guess it was just the right time for me."

Arts Minister Elise Archer congratulated Mr Thomson on his publishing deal.

"Adam is an emerging Tasmanian Aboriginal (pakana) man from Launceston who writes contemporary, Aboriginal themed short fiction," Ms Archer said.

She said in 2019 he received a grant through Arts Tasmania to develop his short story collection and pursue publishing opportunities.

"Adam also undertook a screenwriting attachment during development of the third series of Little J & Big Cuz enabled by Project Development support through Screen Tasmania," Ms Archer said.

"In 2018 he was one of 10 recipients of the Wheeler Centre's inaugural Next Chapter initiative for developing writers and was mentored by Cate Kennedy.

"I look forward to reading Born into this when it is published and watching Adam's career further progress."
