This could see the Spirits dock at Geelong instead of Station Pier at Port Melbourne, three kilometres from Melbourne's CBD.

Last year during government business enterprise hearings, Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson announced TT-Line would consider ports other than the Spirits' current berth at Station Pier when negotiating its lease renewal with VicPorts.

Mr Ferguson described the offer put to TT-Line to continue operating out of Station Pier as "unacceptable" in terms of its pricing and conditions.

Under questioning by the Labor party during Parliament Question Time on Wednesday, Premier Peter Gutwein defended TT-Line looking at other berthing options and confirmed no final decision had been made.

"The prices that are being requested at Station Pier are not acceptable to the Tasmanian government," Mr Gutwein said.

"The price point that is being requested is an onerous one [and] it is appropriate we would look at other options. I make no apologies."

Labor infrastructure spokesman Shane Broad questioned if the government had done any consultation with Tasmanian exporters about a possible move to the Port of Geelong, which would add at least an hour and a half to travel times.

"A key part of the Spirit of Tasmania's appeal is its proximity to Melbourne. Station Pier is positioned centrally for caravaners," Dr Broad said.

"Moving to the Port of Geelong will not only limit travellers but it will reduce the visibility of the service."

Mr Gutwein said time-sensitivity was just one thing exporters were interested in, along with price.

He said an increase in the cost of the lease would be passed on to freight partners and passengers.

"What we want is not only a time-sensitive outcome that works for our exporters and our passengers but we want one that actually meets their pocket as well," Mr Gutwein said.

"Being able to get our goods to market at an appropriate price is important."

Mr Gutwein said it was quite clear Dr Broad was a Station Pier advocate.

"He knows that location has its challenges," Mr Gutwein said.

"Station Pier has only a very small freight staging area which has been problematic. We have trucks and vehicles which are backed up."

The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry called on the government to consult Tasmanian businesses before making any decisions regarding a change in port.

TCCI chief executive Michael Bailey said the Spirits were vital infrastructure for Tasmanian businesses.

"Those vessels are arguably our most important link to the mainland and when docked at Station Pier they are effectively massive floating billboards for our state in the heart of Melbourne, which is probably Tasmania's most important market in terms of exports and visitors," Mr Bailey said.

"It is up to the government to ensure that any decision is in the best interests of everyone who uses the Spirits of Tasmania, not just TT Line's bottom line."

Mr Bailey said moving the Spirits' berth to Geelong could potentially affect vital supply arrangements with Victorian and mainland customers which was of significant concern to the business community.

"In recent years, Tasmanian exporters have invested significantly to develop 'just-in-time' supply lines to Melbourne, especially for premium fresh produce," Mr Bailey said.

"Under the current arrangements, producers know that they can pack their produce in the morning, drop it off in Devonport in the afternoon and it will be delivered to customers first thing the next day.

"Tasmanian product can go from a paddock in Smithton to plate in a Smith Street restaurant in less than a day in a cost-effective way that ensures optimal freshness and quality."
