Khalil (-58kg), Jack Marton (-80kg), Stacey Hymer (-57kg) and Reba Stewart (+67kg) all won gold at this weekend's Oceania qualification tournament, meaning Australia qualified its maximum allotment of two male and two female athletes in the sport.

The quartet are in the box seat to compete at Tokyo 2020, although Australian Taekwondo will not formally pick its Olympic team until the end of this month.

Performances on the European circuit during coming weeks will dictate which four Australians are selected to fight at the Games.

Khalil, who lost a bronze-medal bout in London while making his Olympic debut in 2012 then finished seventh overall in Rio, looms as one of Australia's best hopes of a medal in the sport at the Tokyo Games.

Pita Taufatofua, who caused a stir as Tonga's shirtless flag bearer at Rio 2016, was among the other notable winners at the Olympic qualification event on the Gold Coast.

Taufatofua, who also represented his nation in cross-country skiing at Pyeongchang 2018, has outlined his desire to compete in a third different Olympics sport and been attempting to qualify for Tokyo in sprint kayak.
