On a day when Queensland's Olympic hopeful Wendy Hsuan-Yu Chen took out the women's singles and doubles final in convincing fashion, an appreciative crowd waited until the last match to see a three-setter.
The championship finale didn't disappoint as veteran-young gun pairing Tran Hoang Pham (35) and Ming Lim (25) saw off no. 1 seeds Simon Leung and Mitchell Wheller 21-16, 18-21, 21-16.
"I'm very happy with the match today, it was a tough opponent but Ming played very well so I'm very happy that we made it through to win the title," Pham said.
"For Ming it's the second time [he's won at nationals] so I'm not sure how much it means but for me it's the first time and I'm probably heading toward retirement soon so it means a lot to me.
"Ming has a lot of years [left] and I believe he's gong to win a lot of years to come."
Trailing 7-2 and 11-6 in the deciding set, the underdogs won 10 of the last 13 points thanks to some sparkling play from the vocal Lim.
"I just tried to stay focused and encouraged myself that we still can make it - don't think about the score too much but just one point at a time," Pham said.
"And I believed in my partner as well - I believe in his ability, he's one of the best so that's what gave me confidence."
