Detective Inspector Craig Fox said two men were in custody after being arrested at a nearby residence.

"Four firearms were located in the vehicle," he said.

"The firearms were confirmed stolen from Hardwicke Street in Summerhill this morning and the owner wasn't aware those firearms had been stolen."

Police are continuing their investigations into the incident and no charges have been laid, Detective Fox said.

"The firearms had been stored correctly and were licensed."

Detective Fox said police had noticed a short-term spike in firearm related crime, but that was expected for every type of crime.

"The figures for year year-to-date, and compare with previous years, are about on par," he said.

"It's not that we're having a particularly bad year when it comes to firearm crime, those figures are fairly consistent across the averages for the last few years."

Police who found the stolen firearms had potentially prevented other crimes from occurring, Detective Fox said.

"That could potentially save any other crimes, like the robbery at Domino's last night, from occurring," he said.

"There's no doubt firearms probably are seen as a commodity in the state at the moment, but we're doing our best to work with firearm dealers and firearm owners to make sure those firearms are secure.

"If we do get information about firearms being stolen we act on it very quickly to try to charge the people and more importantly, secure those firearms."
