The activist group received a notice from WorkSafe Tasmania on Thursday that banned it from protesting in forests across the state due to concerns it activities were a health and safety risk.

The notice said a copy of the document must be displayed "in a prominent place at or near the workplace", with fines of up to $25,000 for "failure to display, remove, destroy, damage or deface this notice".

But the activists argue because the WorkSafe "edict" charactises protest sites as a Bob Brown Foundation workplace, the notice must be displayed there, and so they have started attaching them to large trees in the Tarkine.

Dr Brown said Work Health and Safety Regulator Mark Cocker "may have given us a means to protecting those trees" that "up until yesterday were threatened with chainsaws".

"Sustainable Timber Tasmania and the loggers involved need to know that it's a $5000 to $25,000 fine for removal, damage or defacing those signs," he said.

"... We intend to put these notices in every contentious forest coup in Tasmania where we would go to try and stop logging."

Whether the plan will work remains to be seen, however, Mr Cocker did not definitively say loggers would not be pursued if they cut down trees with the notices attached.

"That's something we would consider in a particular set of circumstances," he said.

But the Forest Industry Association of Tasmania acting chief executive Terry Edwards said the foundation's strategy was "ridiculous".

"It's typical of the ridiculous logic they apply to these sorts of things," he said.

"They believe they're above the law and frankly they're trying to make a mockery of the law."

Mr Edwards said the industry was concerned "at the way in which protesters recklessly put themselves in danger" as well as workers.

"Think about how the driver of a piece of forest machinery might feel if one of these protesters climbed onto the boom of the excavator, fell off and got crushed by the tracks," he said.

"People thing this is a victimless crime and it's not. There are very real victims and they are the everyday, hardworking forestry workers who are trying to go about their business."

Minister for Resources Guy Barnett welcomed WorkSafe Tasmania's decision to take action against the Bob Brown Foundation's activities, although he said the regulator was independent.

"People's safety and workers' safety has been put at risk and this is a totally very serious concern," he said.

Mr Barnett said the government wanted industries such as forestry to be able to "get on with the job of being productive industries delivering for our economy and community" without being put at risk by protesters.

But the Australian Lawyers Alliance slammed WorkSafe Tasmania's actions and the "unprecedented use of workplace safety laws to try and curtail the right to protest".

ALA spokesperson Greg Barns said there was "simply no evidence that work place safety has been jeopardised by these protests".

"This is a misuse of government power and seems to be an unprincipled attempt to work around the fact that the government's anti-protest laws were found to be unconstitutional by the High Court in 2017," he said.

"This government seems determined to find a way to scare people away from expressing their views."

Dr Brown said "no protester or worker has ever been injured as a result of our protest in Tasmania with the only exception of some loggers turned on some protesters".

"So it's a furphy and the government is using this as a pretext to protect the logging operations and pretext to keep people out of the forests because it does not want the public eye to see what's going on," he said.

Mr Barnett and Attorney-General Elise Archer said in a statement on Thursday "the government strongly supports free speech and the right to protest, but threats, trespassing and endangering workers is completely unacceptable".

"All protest action should be conducted lawfully and without jeopardising worker safety," they said.
