At Thursday's meeting the council voted to install new equipment that would reduce the running costs of the centre by more than $400,000 in its first year and more than $500,000 in its fifth year of operation.
It is proposed to change the centre from gas operation to a combination of solar and electric.
The centre uses more energy than any other council sites combined. That includes QVMAG and UTAS Stadium.

The centre's current system is unlikely to provide any positive returns beyond this year.
Councillor Rob Soward said things out of the council's control, such as gas prices, had caused the cost blowout.
"I'm excited about doing what we can to save money for rate payers and the environment," he said.
The council declared a climate emergency last year, and all councillors agreed this was a good step forward.
"It's not just about talking the talk," Councillor Alan Harris said.
Councillor Tim Walker said it was a no brainer, saying the energy bill the council pays was "massive".
"I encourage council officers to continue this work," he said.
The council will have to change the budget around to allow funds to be brought forward into the 2019/20 budget. This is expected to happen at the council's next meeting.
