The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated employed people in Tasmania increased from 255,100 in December to a record 256,100 in January in trend terms.

However, full-time employment was flat at 157,200, meaning the growth was in part-time work.

Premier Peter Gutwein said the government's long-term plan to grow the economy and create jobs was working.

He said 21,100 jobs had been created since it took office (in 2014 ) and state employment had reached record highs for 10 consecutive months.

"Tasmania had the highest employment growth rate in the country, with employment growing 3.5 per cent over the year to January 2020, highlighting the importance of a strong economy," Mr Gutwein said.

"At the same time, the unemployment rate is now 1.7 percentage points lower than when we came to government."

Shadow Jobs Minister Michelle O'Byrne said the data showed Tasmanians were finding it harder than ever to get enough work to make ends meet.

She said 46,100 people were either unemployed or needed more hours, while more than 70 per cent of new jobs since 2014 were part-time.

"Underemployment in Tasmania today is the worst it has ever been, at any time, in any state or territory," Ms O'Byrne said.

"It means too many people are finding it harder to get a mortgage and are lacking the security that comes with full-time work."

She said Premier Peter Gutwein had no plan to grow full-time jobs.

The ABS estimated full-time employment had grown by 2500 in a year, despite the flat January.

Employed females increased by 600 in January to a record 122,500.

Employed males increased by 300 to 133,600, which was the highest level since 2008.

Full-time employment was steady for males at at 100,300 and 56,900 for females.

The number of technically unemployed Tasmanians decreased by 200 to 15,600.

That was the smallest total since 2017.

The unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.8 per cent.

The participation rate increased slightly, from 61.1 per cent to 61.2 per cent.

Meanwhile, Tasmanian job vacancies have slumped.

Vacancies were 14.5 per cent fewer in January than in January 2019, according to the federal Education, Skills and Employment Department's internet vacancy index, which covers vacancies newly lodged on three big online recruitment sites.

They weakened by 0.7 per cent in January alone.

Federal Labor Shadow Assistant Minister for Tasmania Carol Brown said the figures were bad news for the 45,400 Tasmanians out of work or looking for more hours.

Senator Brown said vacancies in the North-West had fallen by 4.9 per cent in a year, while vacancies in the North had fallen by 18.6 per cent.
