Premier Peter Gutwein said Legana needed the school to help cope with the growing population.
"Legana just over 20 years ago had a population of around 1500 people, today it has a population of between four and a half five thousand people," he said.
"Over the next decade it is forecast to grow to more than 12,000 people."
Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the plan was to have students at the school in term one of 2024.
He said they had already received more than 100 submissions from the community.
West Tamar Mayor Christina Holmdahl said building a new school would be one of the most important things council do.
"The youth of our community deserve to have the best possible outcome from a new school that we can give them," she said.
The consultation period closes on March 27.
