A Police, Fire and Emergency Management Department spokeswoman said the Tasmania Fire Service were called to an alarm activation at the remand centre on Cimitiere Street about 3.40pm.
"On arrival they located a small fire inside one of the cells which was quickly extinguished by fire crews," the spokeswoman said.
Ambulance Tasmania also attended, with one person treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
DPFEM confirmed the cause of the fire was under investigation.
The centre, located underneath the police station, is used to hold maximum security inmates held on remand.
