A former registered nurse at the Launceston General Hospital, Mr Crawford said, while he already planned to apply for the TFS, attending the TFS's Come and Try Day last year made him want it even more.

The annual Come and Try Day sessions give those considering a career in firefighting a chance to test out their physical skills for free before applying to join the TFS.

"It helped me focus my training before the assessment process began to make sure I was doing all the right things in terms of endurance, strength and fitness," Mr Crawford said.

Mr Crawford, 33, was successful in his application to join the TFS and has been with the service since October last year.

He urged those considering a career in firefighting to not be put off by the sheer number of other applicants competing for the same position.

"You know that it's something everybody wants to do and there is a reason for that," he said.

"It is quite a long journey. There's a lot of boxes to tick and a lot involved.

"[But] it's definitely worth pursing if it's something you have an interest in and if you don't get in the first time, which a lot don't, keep at it."

Stationed at the Launceston Fire Brigade, Mr Crawford said it was really only just the start for his career.

"I've got the best part of four years of training and development to go until I'm a senior firefighter," he said.

"There's scope to advance and continue. There's specialties you can get into later on down the track and leadership or managerial positions you can get into."

Former hairdresser Elyse Hatchard said attending the Come and Try Day last year gave her the drive to pursue a career in firefighting.

The former hairdresser joined the TFS in Burnie full-time last year.

"I was curious about it and thought I wanted it but going along to that made me realise it was exactly what I wanted and that's where I wanted to be," Ms Hatchard said.

The 33-year-old said she had been daunted by the physical aspects of firefighting but getting to try it out reassured her it was achievable.

"I really enjoyed the physical side of it and I really enjoyed the camaraderie," she said.

"Anything you weren't quite ready for you had time to go home and practice.

"Whether you are 100 per cent sure you want to get into the service or you are just curious, it's the best way to have a little taster of it and see what you think."

Anyone who has ever thought about firefighting as a career is encouraged to attend this year's Come and Try Day sessions which are being held over the coming weekends at the TFS's Cambridge Training Facility in Hobart.

Sessions will be held at between 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm on Saturday 15 February, Sunday 16 February, Saturday 22 February and Sunday 23 February.

There will be the opportunity to try the physical abilities assessments of the agility assessment, hose drag, road crash rescue, firefighter rescue and the tower climb.

Firefighters will be on site to show participants the ropes.
