The well-known Launceston local will read the news until April, when Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) hopes to have a new permanent anchor appointed.
"I'm delighted Peter has been able to rearrange his busy schedule to 'hold the fort' while deliberating on a replacement for Jo Palmer," SCA news director Grant Wilson said on Monday.
"It's great to have an accustomed hand on the reigns and, importantly, he provides a strong level of familiarity to our loyal viewers."
Ms Palmer stunned television audiences and industry figures last week when she made the shock announcement she would quit reading Tasmania's top rating news bulletin after 18 years in the role.
Her last bulletin aired on Friday.
Mr Murphy recently celebrated 35 years on Tasmanian TV screens and he has also carved out a successful career in the financial services industry with Tasplan.
Rachel Williams will continue to host weekend Nightly News Seven bulletins.
