She always says the same thing, daughter Diane Leslie said: "Get on with life and take each day as it comes - don't spend too much time thinking about yourself, and just get on with it."
Family and friends celebrated Doris' 100th birthday on Sunday at the Beaconsfield Health and Community Centre, where Ms Leslie said they had plenty to celebrate.
"She's been a wonderful mother, an absolutely wonderful mother," she said. "Home and hearth was everything for mum."
"She's very, very grateful to be reaching 100, and to be as mentally alert as she is. She sees it as a great accomplishment - not everyone makes it that far."
Doris grew up in Nietta in the North-West, and met her late husband Eric Short when she was playing piano at a local dance. They had four children resulting in 67 living descendants across five generations.
