It Is A Glacier, trained by Kent Rattray, was even longer on the tote - paying $157 - when he beat Koolaz Elvis and Destreos in the Launceston Stakes at Mowbray on Sunday night.

As standing-start races go, it was not a great advertisement for that format. After an initial false start, several horses began badly at the second attempt and Sea Double Ugrant's driver Peter Dornauf was knocked out of his sulky.

However that didn't detract from Hayward's win on a horse that had been placed only once in 11 previous starts in Tasmania.

The driver, who was in tears after the race, had It Is A Glacier away quickly from outside the front row and he settled second behind Destreos.

The 10-year-old then enjoyed a soft run before Hayward eased off the pegs nearing the home turn.

He took a while to shake off Destreos but got clear about 100m out and held on to score by 2.3m.

In other races, two of the most promising horses in the state went on their winning way, both scoring with something in reserve.

The Shallows, raced, trained and driven by Heath Woods, of Broadmarsh, was totally dominant in the Rating 64-75, chalking up his seventh consecutive win.

And, former NSW five-year-old Lip Reader was too good in the Harry Holgate Memorial final, maintaining an unbeaten record in three starts for Beauty Point trainer Rohan Hillier.
