This is where Seedlab Tasmania comes in.

Seedlab Tasmania is helping farmers like Mr Young, and other agri-business, food, drink and agri-tourism startups, to build their consumer base and market their products interstate, or even global.

It will provide a two year program of expertise, resource and training to assist export and drive growth.

Mr Young grows a popcorn variety of sweetcorn from which he collects kernels with a hand-wind machine, before drying them on-farm to be sold as unpopped kernels.

"Seedlab Tasmania has given me the opportunity to look at expanding outside Tasmania and will help me get to the point where I will be able to do that. I'm really good at growing and producing but when it comes to putting that story on a label - that is not my forte."

Seedlab founder Hazel MacTavish-West said producers were welcome to join the program.

"We have gin, honey and olive oil producers, plant-based food, mushrooms and miso, nothing is too weird...we are looking for super stars who have a fantastic idea, or who are developing something in a unique way, who we can bring on this journey to help them grow."

Northern Tasmania Development Corporation chief executive Mark Baker said the project was very exciting for local agri-businesses.

"Tasmanians are rightly very proud of their food, drink and other complementary agri-businesses. What this program aims to do is take those emerging and entrepreneurial businesses from germination to the next level."

Mr Baker said growing agri-businesses and increasing exports were a key focus of NTDC.

"It is a tremendously exciting time to be at the ground floor of the next Northern Tasmanian success story and fits perfectly with the state's brand."
