Twenty-two ground crews, six aircraft and a number of support vehicles were deployed to the area in the Tamar Valley.
The fire was elevated to Emergency in the early stages of the fire, before being downgraded to Watch and Act and subsequently Advice level in the early evening.
TFS Operations Officer Brett Fazackerley said the fire was caused by sparks from machinery at a Winkleigh property.
He said given the current dry conditions, people should exercise extreme caution when operating machinery, as sparks can easily start a fire that can quickly get out of control.
"The fire was accidental ... what the person was doing wasn't illegal, even if it was careless," he said.
TFS teams continued into the night to contain the blaze.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The TFS has confirmed the fire burnt approximately 250 hectares of land.
Bureau of Meteorology state manager Simon McCulloch said a rain band was expected to hit the entire state over night about midnight and lead into cooler weather over the weekend.
He said the bureau anticipates about 20 to 30mm in the North and North West, as well as possible thunderstorms.
"The good news is that any thunderstorms we get are going to be wet thunderstorms - we are unlikely to get any dry lightening out of this," he said.
Mr McCulloch did add the East Coast will only receive about 5 to 10mm of rain, however.
TFS Acting Regional Chief Dale Rayner said this weekend's rain will do little to help ease fire tension.
"The state's rain deficit particularly on the eastern side and through the midlands so it really won't make any difference," he said.
Smoke and ash will make it difficult to see and breathe.
