The project is that of Australian Bauxite Limited, who recently landed CSIRO senior principal research leader Mark Cooksey as an advisor in commercialising the development of the facility.

Both George Town mayor Greg Kieser and Chamber of Commerce chief executive James Cameron said the facility would add to the momentum that is building in the Bell Bay precinct.

The facility would employ more than 100 people early on in the in building and operation of the facility.

Cr Kieser said a number of these jobs could be filled by people in the Tamar Valley.

"I think there is a broader cross-section and the Tamar Valley region than people realise, I'm confident that we'll fill a large proportion of those roles," he said.

"There is a realistic expectation that some of those roles may be specialised by nature and sourced from elsewhere."

Mr Cameron said with so many developments in the Bell Bay precinct, including plans for a hydrogen plant and veneer mill, now is a good time to increase education locally to equip a workforce should the projects come to fruition.

"One of the calls I've been making for a while is to ramp up training at the Port Dalrymple Centre ... whether we can start increasing the skills space there and catering to the opportunities that are looking like they are going to be presented in the next couple of years," he said.
