Premier Peter Gutwein said the position would be advertised nation-wide commencing Saturday, February 1.
"This is an exciting leadership opportunity for someone with the right skills and capabilities to help build on our strong and economically vibrant state as the steward for land, air and water, in partnership with the community and industry," Mr Gutwein said.
"Applications will close before the end of February."
The position was left vacant after Dr John Whittington resigned to take on the role of chief executive of the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre.
Dr Whittington had held the role for five years.
Until the recruitment process is finalised, Tim Baker will be acting DPIPWE secretary.
Mr Baker was former premier Will Hodgman's chief of staff who recently returned to DPIPWE following Mr Hodgman's resignation.
