Harry Bourchier, the Hobart product whose rise up the ranks last year has seen him enter the world's top 300, ousted last year's runner-up Maverick Banes in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in a match that lasted more than 90 minutes.
Bourchier also put in a strong performance in Burnie last year, reaching the quarter-finals.
With Australians dominating the field, all-Aussie battles were not uncommon, including the contest between Jason Kubler and Blake Ellis saw Kubler take the win 6-4, 6-4.
Wildcard Tristan Schoolkate ended Akira Santillan's campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 win in 56 minutes, with Blake Mott another Australian who fell after American Evan King disposed of him 6-2, 6-4.
Evan Song, also from the US, defeated Canadian Filip Peliwo 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Greece's Michail Pervolarakis also had straight sets success, with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Germany's Tobias Simon, as did Australia's Thomas Fancutt over Japan's Rio Noguchi 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Japan's Yuta Shimizu defeated Croatia's Viktor Galovic 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) and Croatia's Borna Gojo defeated Argentina's Matias Franco Descotte 6-1, 6-3.
The day started with Italy's Andrea Vavassori knocking out Australian wildcard Dane Sweeny 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 in a game that lasted well over two hours.
Another time-consuming contest came between Australians Jacob Grills and Dayne Kelly, with Grills winning 6-2, 6-7 (7-4), 6-4 in more than two hours.
Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic defeated France's Sadio Doumbia 6-2, 7-5.
A well known surname was in action in the qualifiers, with Petros Tsitsipas, the brother of Stefanos, advancing via a 6-4,4-6, 6-4 win over Japan's Naoki Tajima.
Tajima's countryman Takuto Niki defeated Finland's Harri Heliovaara, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3).
Tuesday's play will start at 10am at the Burnie Tennis Club.
