In March 1954 she moved to Tasmania from a village just outside Venice in Italy to join her husband in Launceston, who had moved earlier before they settled in the city and started a family.

Mrs Tiveron was one of the oldest conferees of the 160 people who became Australian Citizens in Launceston on Sunday.

The 85-year-old said she had been looking forward to becoming an Australian for some time.

"I feel a little bit emotion but I'm glad I did it, I feel proud," she said.

"Years went by and I said that's it, all my family is Australian and I said what am I doing being Italian, I'm going to become Australian."

Despite moving to the country all those years ago, she said she had waited as her husband remained Italian.

After moving to Apple Isle they had two children and Mrs Tiveron was surrounded by her family and friends at the event.

"I'm a very lucky person," she said.

"When I saw [my friends] come and pick me up I started getting all emotional.

"I said this is it, i'm going to be an Aussie...when they gave me the certificate I had tears in my eyes and I said now I am.

Mrs Tiveron said she could not pick a favourite thing about the city because she liked everything about it.

"I've always been in Tasmania and always in Launceston," she said.

"I like the people, I like the place, I like the way they live, everything I like here and I don't intend to leave this country."

The newly pledged Australians came from all around the world including Zimbabwe, Canada, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Tonga, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Candidates make a pledge to the country, their final step in the citizenship process, before Mayor Albert van Zetten presented the citizenship certificates.

The conferees were provided gifts from the city's organisations and a morning tea but Mrs Tiveron, despite a fractured ankle, was going home to cook some pasta for her family after the ceremony.
