Funding for the Launceston Ten could be in jeopardy after the event's 2019 cancellation if the City of Launceston councillors don't vote with the officer's recommendation.
The council will consider the event's sponsorship at its meeting on Thursday.
The Launceston Running Festival, which the Launceston Ten is a key component, has run every winter since 2007 except for 2019.
In 2017, the council agreed to a three-year funding agreement. One of the conditions of the funding is that payment is dependent on the event going ahead in the previous year and that if the event is cancelled the council is to be told about it promptly.

However, because the event was cancelled last year the council now has to agree to support the third installment of the funding. The $15,000 budgeted by the council for the 2019 event was not paid out.
"This situation has not arisen since Signature Event funding has been in place, so there is no precedent to determine the best outcome for the [council]," the meeting agenda said.
The council is recommended to give the final payment of $15,000 funding to the event.
"Even though the funding agreement does allow for this final year of the current triennial agreement to not be paid, the recommendation is for it to be paid on the basis the event proceeds and all other conditions of the funding agreement are met," the agenda said.
"It would be beneficial for Launceston to see this event return, given its popularity and its prominence on the events calendar during the cooler months."
The council said event organisers are planning to go ahead with the 2020 event with a different approach to the event's organisation.
"This will enable an event of this size to build on the plans that already exist, to be activated within four months of the proposed date," the agenda said.
The Launceston Running Festival was not able to go ahead in 2019 because there was not enough relevant financial support to make the event viable for the organisers, even with the council funding, the agenda said.
The council said the event is very successful and popular, attracting a high level of athletes, and being dubbed Australia's fastest 10-kilometre run.
The meeting will be held at the Town Hall from 1pm.
