Mr Hodgman on Friday appeared at his first press conference since he made an announcement three days ago that he would resign as the state's leader.

"I think it would be inappropriate for somebody who is not going to be a member of the new team moving forward to make decisions about who the next leader will be," he said.

Despite the known moderate-conservative division within the Liberal Party, Mr Hodgman said he had led a united team over his 14 years as Liberal leader.

"I'm proud of the fact that in the time that I was leader, not once was I challenged," he said.

"I had the strong support of my team the whole way through.

"I'm proud of the fact that most importantly we were able to give Tasmania stability in a political landscape.

"It's important that political parties can manage themselves well so they can focus on the people that really matter - the Tasmanian people."

Peter Gutwein announced on Thursday he would vie for the leadership with Jeremy Rockliff as his deputy.

Both men are considered moderates.

Michael Ferguson announced shortly after he would also contest the leadership with Elise Archer as his deputy.

Both are considered conservative.

Mr Hodgman said he was sure unity within the party would continue after Monday's vote.

"I don't think it hurts for there to be some competition and a contest for what's a really important job," he said.

"There's a passion, a commitment and a drive right across our government but particularly for those taking on leadership positions which should be relished."

Mr Hodgman said he had talked to Mr Gutwein and Mr Ferguson following his announcement on Tuesday

He said he expected Mr Rockliff would see out his time in Parliament until the next election, regardless of the vote.

Mr Hodgman said he had not had any job offers and planned to remain living in the state.

"I'm starting to hear rumours that might be so but we are well-settled here," he said.
