The United Workers Union has called for correctional officers to be included the My Pulse scheme for frontline workers which would see psychologists based on-site the state's prisons to assist members.

Aileen Britten, whose husband has been a custodial officer for 15 years, said her husband was house-bound after being diagnosed with PTSD.

"My husband has sacrificed 15 years of his life and our family to support fellow Tasmanians with very little support from management," Ms Britten said.

"For the first two months, we did not get one phone call from the department to ask 'how's Simon' [or] 'is Simon okay?'"

Ms Britten said her husband had been assaulted at work on a number of occasions and she felt the department had not supported him in the way he needed.

"The strong man he thought he was, fought through the pain, the suffering and the mental exhaustion and went back to work knowing that this was affecting this family," she said.

"I have two young children that on a number of occasions have cried to me they want their dad back."

Tara Devine said working as a correctional officer has changed her husband who has also been diagnosed with PTSD.

"I have three daughters and they keep picking a time before all this happened and they want to go back to that time. I want my husband back," Ms Devine said.

"We put ourselves in debt to move because of incidents that happened that were never, ever followed up. Nobody was held accountable."

Ms Devine said correctional officers needed more support at work and at home from someone with knowledge and understanding of the work environment.

"These are men who don't want to talk about problems, unfortunately, but if asked they will talk," she said.

UWU delegate and correctional supervisor Phil Pregnell said a program like My Pulse would help members going through hardship, PTSD and the daily problems facing correctional officers.

"It is disappointing that [correctional officers] were not initially involved in the My Pulse program," Mr Pregnell said.

A Department of Justice spokesperson said the TPS was consulting with unions on a program similar to My Pulse which would be better tailored to the corrections environment.

"In recent months, additional staff have been assigned to the TPS Work Health and Safety unit allowing the department to respond more quickly to support staff following incidents," the spokesperson said.

"In addition to the Employee Assistance Program, the TPS has a network of officers who have received training and are available to support fellow staff following incidents. This is referred to as the MATES program."

The DoJ confirmed on Friday 18 correctional officers, of a total 345 uniform officers, were currently out on workers compensation.

The spokesperson said, while it was not appropriate to comment on the personal circumstances of corrections staff, more generally PTSD was a compensable injury.

"In reforms adopted by the government, there is a presumption of acceptance of work-related PTSD claims in the State Service. This makes it easier for TPS staff to make a claim and have it accepted," the spokesperson said.

"Staff on workers compensation are supported by a medical plan which is fully funded. If they require other supports for day-to-day living these may also be funded.

"Staff on workers compensation are allocated an injury management coordinator to assist with their needs and are also allocated a return to work coordinator when they are ready to take the step of returning."

Department management are scheduled to meet with union delegates to discuss their concerns about the TPS on January 22.

UWU spokeswoman Jannette Armstrong said she would like to see a change in the way the government deals with the TPS.

"Correctional officers are currently suffering high rates of injury and PTSD without access to the preventative services offered to other first responders [and] we are seeing an unacceptable number of corrections officers out on workers compensation" Ms Armstrong said.

Ms Armstrong said if Corrections Minister Elise Archer were to stay on in the role, given a cabinet reshuffle is imminent following the resignation of Premier Will Hodgman, there would need to be a change in her approach.
