Long enough for the government to have read it, considered it, released it and commented on it with details on how they are going to proceed should its viability stack up.
About 65,000 supporters signed up to the United We Stand campaign - a significant number of football fans giving the concept their backing. Many believe a Tasmanian team is pie in the sky, but with AFL House, government and private-sector financial support it is possible and would provide an added incentive for mainlanders to visit Launceston and Hobart.
When events such as the AFL are staged in Northern Tasmania, Launceston's CBD feels alive - weekend trading is at fever pitch.
The business community is behind it, so too are the state's diehard football fraternity who say a Tassie team would have positive impacts on the state's pathway to the top flight for both men and women. When the influential taskforce handed over the report in December, the state government said it would "take the appropriate time to consider" the "comprehensive document".
Should the report suggest Tasmanian goes all in to establish a team, it is now time to start convincing the AFL commission that the state is ready to join the "national" competition before all enthusiasm and momentum is lost. How long is considered an appropriate time to consider?
Admittedly it was handed down on just before public service departments started the festive break, but this must be an open and transparent process for the Tasmanian public to trust entering the AFL and AFLW is the correct decision.
Some would argue we should not need the government to formulate a detailed response before it releases the report but there must be full disclosure, unlike past reports involving the AFL that tend to only reveal information they want the public to know. Secret business won't cut it here.
Full disclosure of the pros and cons is required soon for confidence and momentum built up is maintained.
