Police were made aware of concerns for the man's welfare after he didn't return from a boating trip.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was deployed to search the area and located the vessel about 3.30am on the southern spit near Humbug Point.

"Police verified that the single male occupant was safe, however, due to the environment and conditions at the time, were unable to winch him from the boat," Inspector Michael Johnston said.
The vessel was refloated with the high tide and was safely returned to shore about 7am.
"Boaters are reminded of the need to ensure they have all safety equipment, including life jackets, and good communication systems," Inspector Johnston said.
