Tourism Industry Council chief executive Luke Martin said it was Tasmania's busiest time of year and he had heard no reports of the fires having an impact on visitor numbers.

"That being said I believe the fires are going to have a significant impact on Australian tourism nationally over the next 12 months at least, given the sheer scale of coverage that's gone out into our international visitor markets across the globe," Mr Martin said.

"People overseas don't understand the size and scale of Australia so reports around 'unprecedented fires' and some of the terrible images going out to the media are going to take some time to reset, and demonstrate to our inbound market nearly all of Australia's major visitor destinations have not been affected by these fires.

"It is too soon to ascertain what this will mean for Tasmania, and i'm reluctant to make any assumptions about the impact down here, given four out of five visitors to Tasmania are from interstate, not overseas."

Mr Martin welcomed a national campaign to encourage Australians to holiday at home and support communities affected by the bushfires.

"Tassie is a lot different to the rest of the country as we really have a supply challenge at the moment, not a visitor demand one, and we really need to inject more air and sea capacity into the State to see a further upsurge in visitation," he said.

"We have a capacity challenge over our peak visitor period, which is obviously these summer months. The airline loadings this time of year are very high, and obviously the Spirits are very busy this time of year.

"But we also need to be mindful about growing demand sustainably, and as much as we can growing demand over the shoulder months and winter.

"We cant be a destination that just bullishly grows visitor demand over a very busy three months of the year over summer just to fall away over the rest of the year."

Tourism Tasmania chief executive John Fitzgerald said it was too early to determine the travel behaviours of Australians as a consequence of the bushfires.

"Whilst Tasmania's key tourist destinations are open and unaffected, conditions can change so we're reminding our visitors to remain informed," Mr Fitzgerald said.

"It is too early to determine the travel behaviours of Australians as a consequence of the bushfires, but Tasmania will be active in our domestic markets throughout 2020.

Tourism Tasmania is working closely with Tourism Australia and the nation's other state tourism organisations in a coordinated effort to minimise the impact on the tourism industry nationwide and protect Australia's destination brand in international markets."

He said Tasmania was monitoring the response in international markets to the fires in international to ensure visitors had up-to-date information.

"Tasmania's brand and international reputation is very strong, evidenced by the demand experienced over summer period by our accommodation providers, festivals and experiences," Mr Fitzgerald said.
