Inspector Shane LeFevre said about 1pm on Wednesday a mayday call was received from a fishing vessel "Southern Hope" which was in the Low Rocky Point area.
He said the vessel had two people on board and they had abandoned ship into a dingy as the vessel was taking on water.
"A nearby fishing vessel "Ballbreaker" was in the area and immediately steamed to the stricken vessel. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also dispatched to the area however was not required," Inspector LeFevre said.
He said both people were safely rescued by the nearby vessel and would be transported back to port. They were uninjured as a result of abandoning the boat.
"The vessel is believed to be washed up onto rocks in the area. At this stage it is unknown if a salvage operation will occur," he said.
"The reasons for the vessel sinking will now be investigated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority."
