It's presumed that the site near Tim Shea in the Florentine Valley was where Churchill's Hut was located and it's listed as such on the Tasmanian Heritage Register.

A Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment Department spokesperson confirmed that the THR entry for "the place known as Churchill's Hut" had been "earmarked" for review.

"At the time the place was entered in the Register it was recognised there was uncertainty about whether the hut placed on the Register was the actual Churchill's Hut," the spokesperson said.

"An assessment of the history surrounding this place and field work to verify the likely location of the original hut site has commenced."

Tiger trapper and osmiridium miner Elias Churchill caught the last thylacine in 1933, supposedly keeping it in the single-room, bush-pole frame hut.

The hut, 10 metres south of the Adamsfield Track and 100 metres west of Churchill Creek, came under threat from bushfire about this time last year.

The Parks and Wildlife Service was estimated to have spent roughly $20,000 on protecting the heritage-listed structure, which was destroyed.

But it turns out it may have been a fool's errand, as doubts continue to circulate about the hut's provenance.

As detailed in Right to Information documents obtained by The Examiner earlier this year, the effort to save Churchill's Hut prompted Heritage Tasmania heritage assessment officer Nic Haygarth to write to the statutory body's senior management, questioning the legitimacy of the hut listed on the register.

Dr Haygarth said the real Churchill's Hut was built about 1925 on the northern side of the Adamsfield Track, rather than the southern side, and that the structure entered in the THR looked "nothing" like the only surviving picture of Churchill's Hut.
